About Campeche

Ancient village of a splendorous Mayan culture, the village Ah-Kim-Pech that in Mayan tongue means “Place of Snakes and Ticks” was founded by Spaniards in 1540. Among the native characters that stand out the most are the intellectual politician Justo Sierra and the famous writer Juan de la Cabada.

Campeche is the main city and state’s capital, legendary city that saves a piece of the Mexican history in its streets and alleys, where you still can feel the presence of Spaniards conquerors, the pirate invaders and civilian battles from the XIX century.

The historical center of Campeche City is the main nerve of commercial, cultural, administrative and tourist activities of the state, with an architecture that combines masterfully constructions from the XVI, XVII, XVIII, and XIX centuries with constructions of military, civil and religious architecture as well as complexes of offices and houses from the XX century.

In the San Roman, San Francisco and Guadalupe neighborhoods, you can find constructions such as: la Casa 6, Carvajal Mansion, Archivo Municipal, Francisco de Paula Toro Theater, Campeche Main Plaza, County Palace, Campeche Library and the Teniente del Rey House, among the most famous constructions are Guadalupe Church, Campeche Cathedral, San Roman Church, San Francisco Church and the San Jose Ex Temple.

One of the most important and notorious works of Campeche is the Malecon, which has an extension of 3.5 km long and is settled as a modern architecture model providing a beautiful setting of the coast view.

Campeche possesses a littoral in front of the Gulf of Mexico of 60 kms long that makes it a great tourist attraction. Therefore is highly recommendable to visit and have fun with the several choices for leisure and entertainment offered here.
